Omija (오미자) Concentrate

Here in Korea it’s May 15th – a great day known as Teacher’s Day! In Korea, it’s quite an event. I received this sweet (literally) gift from some of my students. Look at the cute traditional packaging!image

Here is the bottle. It is a bottle of concentrated ‘omija’. Omija is known as the ‘five flavor berry’ in English and known by its other name – Schisandra. It is known for its distinct flavor(s)! Here’s some information about Omija.

The description from Wikipedia:

Its Chinese name comes from the fact that its berries possess all five basic flavors: salty, sweet, sour, pungent (spicy), and bitter.

Here’s a list of some of the possible benefits of Schisandra (Omija):

Schisandra is also used for preventing early aging and increasing lifespan; normalizing blood sugar and blood pressure; and stimulating the immune system and speeding recovery after surgery.
It is also used for treating liver disease (hepatitis) and protecting the liver from poisons.

Other uses for schisandra include treatment of high cholesterol, coughs, asthma, sleep problems (insomnia), nerve painpremenstrual syndrome (PMS), chronicdiarrhea, dysentery, night sweats, spontaneous sweating, involuntary discharge of semen, thirst, erectile dysfunction (ED), physical exhaustion, excessive urination, depression, irritability, and memory loss.

Pour about two-three spoonfuls of liquid concentrate into the class, and add water as desired. It is delicious both hot and cold but these days, drinking it cold with ice is particularly awesome.

imageRefreshing! Enjoy!
